CVT Transmission Removal and Installation

Special Tools Required

NOTE:

Engine support hanger AAR-T1256 must be used with the side engine mount installed.

Keep all foreign particles out of the transmission.

Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.

1.	Vehicle - Lift

2.	HDS DLC - Connect

3.	SCS - Short

Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.

Jump the SCS line with the HDS, and wait more than 1 minute.

4.	Left Front Fender Trim - Remove

5.	Hood - Wide Open

Open the hood, and secure it with the hood support rod in the wide-open position (A).

6.	Steering Joint - Disconnect

NOTE: Hold the steering wheel with the steering wheel holder tool.

7.	12 Volt Battery - Remove

8.	Air Cleaner - Remove

9.	Intake Air Pipe - Remove

10.	PCM with Bracket - Remove

Disconnect the connectors (A).

Remove the harness clamps (B) and the harness holder (C).

Remove the PCM (D) with the bracket.

11.	12 Volt Battery Base - Remove

Remove the harness clamps (A).

Remove the battery base (B).

NOTE: Loosen the bolts (C), without removing them.

12.	Shift Cable (Transmission Side) - Remove

NOTE: Do not bend the shift cable excessively.

Remove the lock pin (A) and the control pin (B).

Remove the shift cable end (C).

Remove the shift cable bracket.

13.	Transmission Fluid Warmer and Fluid Warmer Strainer - Remove

NOTE: To prevent damage, cover the solenoid wire harness A connector (A) using a shop towel.

Remove the transmission fluid warmer (B) with the O-rings (C) without disconnecting the transmission fluid warmer hoses.

NOTE: The transmission fluid warmer is aluminum part. Check the transmission fluid warmer for wear and damage.

Put plastic bag over the transmission fluid warmer.

Support the transmission fluid warmer using a strap.

Remove the transmission fluid warmer strainer (D) with the O-ring (E).

Check the transmission fluid warmer strainer for damage or clogging. If it is damaged or clogged, replace it.

NOTE: Do not use compressed air to clean the transmission fluid warmer strainer.

14.	Engine Wire Harness (Transmission Side) - Remove

Disconnect the connectors.

Disconnect the connectors (A).

NOTE: To prevent damage, cover the solenoid wire harness A connector (B) using the shop towel.

Remove the harness brackets (A).

Remove the harness clamps (A).

Remove the harness holder.

Disconnect the connector.

Remove the harness holder.

Disconnect the connector.

15.	Fuel Bracket - Remove

Remove high pressure fuel pump cover.

Disconnect the connectors (A).

Remove the harness clamps (B).

Remove the harness clamps (A).

Remove the harness holder (B).

Unclamp the heater hoses (A).

Remove the fuel bracket (B).

16.	EVAP Canister Purge Valve - Remove

Disconnect the connector (A).

Remove the EVAP canister purge valve (B).

17.	Support Eyelet - Install

Install the support eyelet with a spacer (A).

NOTE: Select a spacer that is long enough that the support eyelet does not interfere with the surrounding parts.

18.	Cowl Top Cover - Remove (Both Sides)

19.	Engine Support Hanger - Install

NOTE:

Be careful when working around the windshield.

Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead.

Remove the harness clamps (A).

Install the engine support hanger onto the vehicle as shown.

Attach the hook (B) to the slotted hole in the support eyelet.

Tighten the wing nut (C) by hand, and lift and support the engine/transmission.

20.	Upper Transmission Assembly Mounting Bolt - Remove

21.	Transmission Mount - Remove

22.	Vehicle - Lift Up

23.	Front Wheel - Remove (Both Sides)

24.	Splash Shield - Remove

25.	Front Floor Undercover - Remove

26.	Propeller Shaft (Transfer Side) - Disconnect (AWD/4WD)

27.	Transmission Fluid - Drain

Remove the drain plug (A), and drain the transmission fluid.

NOTE:

Drain the transmission fluid for more than 5 minutes.

Remove metal particles from the magnetic surface of the drain plug.

Reinstall the drain plug using a new sealing washer (B).

28.	Exhaust Pipe A, Exhaust Pipe Bracket, and Under-Floor TWC - Remove

NOTE: Disconnect the secondary HO2 connector, do not remove secondary HO2S from the under-floor TWC assembly.

29.	Transfer Assembly - Remove (AWD/4WD)

30.	Lower Arm Ball Joint - Disconnect (Both Sides)

31.	Tie-Rod End Ball Joint - Disconnect (Both Sides)

32.	Stabilizer Link - Disconnect (Both Sides)

33.	EPS Connector - Disconnect

NOTE: After disconnected the EPS connector, remove the harness clip.

34.	Torque Converter - Disconnect

Remove the torque converter cover.

Remove eight torque converter bolts while rotating the crankshaft pulley.

35.	Lower Torque Rod Bolt - Remove

36.	Front Engine Mount Mounting Bolt - Remove

37.	Front Subframe - Support

Attach the subframe adapter to the front subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the front subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), then tighten the wing nut (C).

Raise a transmission jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then tighten the bolts.

38.	Front Subframe - Remove

Remove the subframe side mounting bolts (A) on both sides.

Remove the front subframe mounting bolts.

Lower the front subframe carefully.

NOTE: Check that the front subframe is free of the electrical wiring.

39.	Transmission - Support

Support the transmission with the transmission jack.

40.	Front Driveshaft, Inboard joint - Disconnect

Disconnect the inboard joint of the left and right driveshafts.

Secure the driveshaft to the body with a nylon strap on both sides.

41.	Intermediate Shaft - Remove

42.	Lower Transmission Assembly Mounting Bolts - Remove

43.	Transmission - Remove

Check once again that the transmission is free of hoses and electrical wiring.

Lower the transmission by loosening the wing nut of the engine support hanger, and tilt the engine just enough for the transmission to clear its end from the side frame.

Slide the transmission away from the engine, then remove the transmission from the vehicle.

NOTE: Be careful not to drop the torque converter.

44.	Dowel Pin - Remove

45.	Torque Converter - Remove

46.	Drive Plate - Inspect

Inspect the drive plate, and replace if it is damaged.

47.	Harness Brackets - Remove

NOTE:

Keep all foreign particles out of the transmission.

Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.

1.	Harness Brackets - Install

2.	Torque Converter - Install

3.	Dowel Pin - Install

4.	Transmission - Install

Place the transmission on a transmission jack, and raise the transmission to the engine level.

Attach the transmission on the engine.

5.	Lower Transmission Assembly Mounting Bolts - Install

6.	Intermediate Shaft - Install

7.	Front Driveshaft, Inboard joint - Connect

8.	Front Subframe - Support

Attach the subframe adapter to the front subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the front subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), then tighten the wing nut (C).

Raise the transmission jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then tighten the bolts.

9.	Front Subframe - Install

Raise the front subframe up to the body.

Loosely install new front subframe mounting bolts.

Loosely install new front subframe mid bolts on both sides.

Align the front subframe with the subframe alignment pin, then tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque.

Remove the transmission jack and the subframe adapter.

10.	Front Engine Mount Mounting Bolt - Loosely Install

11.	Lower Torque Rod Bolt - Loosely Install

12.	Torque Converter - Connect

Rotate the engine crankshaft pulley as necessary to tighten the eight torque converter bolts to half of the specified torque, then to the final torque in a crisscross pattern.

After tightening the last torque converter bolt, check that the crankshaft rotates freely.

Install the torque converter cover.

13.	EPS Connector - Connect

NOTE: After connected the EPS connector, Install the harness clip.

14.	Stabilizer Link - Connect (Both Sides)

15.	Tie-Rod End Ball Joint - Connect (Both Sides)

16.	Lower Arm Ball Joint - Connect (Both Sides)

17.	Transfer Assembly - Install (AWD/4WD)

18.	Exhaust Pipe A, Exhaust Pipe Bracket, and Under-Floor TWC - Install

NOTE: After installed the under-floor TWC, connect the secondary HO2 connector.

19.	Propeller Shaft (Transfer Side) - Connect (AWD/4WD)

20.	Front Floor Undercover - Install

21.	Vehicle - Lift Down

22.	Transmission Mount - Loosely Install

NOTE: Do the mounts tightening procedure before tightening all of the mounts' bolts and nuts.

23.	Upper Transmission Assembly Mounting Bolt - Install

24.	Engine Support Hanger and Support Eyelet - Remove

Remove the engine support hanger.

Remove the support eyelet with the spacer (A).

25.	Cowl Top Cover - Install (Both Sides)

26.	All Engine Mount Mounting Bolt and Nut - Tighten

27.	EVAP Canister Purge Valve - Install

Install the EVAP canister purge valve (A).

Connect the connector (B).

NOTE: Check the connector for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary.

28.	Fuel Bracket - Install

Install the fuel bracket (A).

Clamp the heater hoses (B).

Install the harness holder (A).

Install the harness clamps (B).

Install the harness clamps (A).

Connect the connectors (B).

NOTE: Check the connectors for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary.

Install high pressure fuel pump cover.

29.	Engine Wire Harness (Transmission Side) - Install

Connect the connector.

NOTE: Check the connector for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary.

Install the harness holder.

Connect the connector.

NOTE: Check the connector for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary.

Install the harness holder.

Install the harness clamps (A).

Install the harness brackets (A).

Connect the connectors.

NOTE: Check the connector for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary.

Connect the connectors.

NOTE: Check the connector for corrosion, dirt, or oil, and clean or repair if necessary.

30.	Transmission Fluid Warmer/Strainer - Install

NOTE: To prevent damage, cover the solenoid wire harness A connector (A) using a shop towel.

Clean the mounting surface of the transmission.

Install the transmission fluid warmer strainer (B) with a new O-ring (C).

Install the transmission fluid warmer (D) with new O-rings (E).

NOTE: The transmission fluid warmer is aluminum part. Check the transmission fluid warmer for wear and damage.

31.	Shift Cable (Transmission Side) - Install

NOTE: Do not bend the shift cable excessively.

Install the shift cable bracket.

Apply molybdenum grease to the inner surface of the hole (A) in the shift cable end (B).

Install the shift cable end.

Install the control pin (C), and secure the control pin with the lock pin (D) in the direction shown.

32.	Transmission Fluid - Refill

33.	12 Volt Battery Base - Install

Install the battery base (A).

Install the harness clamps (B).

34.	PCM - Install

Install the PCM (A) with the bracket.

Install the harness holder (B) and the harness clamps (C).

Connect the connectors (D).

35.	Intake Air Pipe - Install

36.	Air Cleaner - Install

37.	12 Volt Battery - Install

38.	Steering Joint - Connect

39.	Shift Cable - Adjust

40.	Splash Shield - Install

41.	Front Wheel - Install

42.	Transmission - After Install Check

Make sure all four wheels to rotate freely.

Start the engine.

NOTE: Check that the engine starts in P or N position/mode, and does not start in any other positions/modes.

Check the shift lever operation.

Move the shift lever through all positions/modes, and verify the transmission range switch matches with the A/T gear position indicator.

Make sure the vehicle is turned to the OFF (LOCK) mode with the shift lever is in P position/mode. If it does not, adjust the shift cable.

43.	Transmission Fluid Level - Check

44.	Front Wheel Alignment - Check

45.	VSA Sensor Neutral Position - Memorize

46.	Steering Angle Sensor Neutral Position - Clear

47.	Vehicle - Test-Drive
